1. Introduction - Observed planetary and satellite magnetic fields - Overview of planetary magnetic field properties - Overview of planetary interior structures - Overview of known and unknowns 2. Mathematical description of planetary magnetic field - Toroidal/Poloidal decomposition of magnetic field - Spherical harmonics - Potential field in the electrical insulator: separation of internal and external magnetic field - Potential field in the electrical insulator: extending surface magnetic observations to the planetary interiors 3. Geophysical mechanisms of planetary magnetism: an overview - Origin of planetary magnetism and their interior structures - Self-generated magnetic field: planetary dynamo - Living in an existing magnetic environment: magneto-convection and induction 4. Dynamo theory - Fundamental theory - Necessary condition for dynamo action - Numerical dynamo simulation: the booming business in geomagnetism and planetary magnetism - Geomagnetic data assimilation: beginning of a new discipline 5. Projects There will be no test for this course. In stead, students are divided into two groups for the project to investigate the theoretical scenarios on the planetary magnetic fields and their relations to the planetary evolution history, and the planetary interior properties. One group focuses on terrestrial planets, and the other on gaseous giant planets. Both groups shall present their project results in the last class, each given 30 minutes for presentation and 15 minutes for discussion. 6. There is no appropriate textbook dedicated to planetary magnetism. Therefore, I will recommend some other books and research paper later
